September is Infant Mortality Awareness Month

This September, we’re doubling down on efforts to improve maternal/infant health in recognition of Infant Mortality Awareness Month. From neighborhood microgrants to a health center makeover, we’ve got a lot going on.What will you do? Tell us how you’re celebrating moms, babies and families by emailing us at info@cradlecincinnati.org.Neighborhood-Based Microgrants with Cradle Cincinnati Connections, People’s Liberty and the United Way. “If it’s for me, build it with me,” is the mantra guiding community-driven solutions in two of our highest-risk neighborhoods: Millvale and Moosewood. Six women living in these areas are partnering with Cradle Cincinnati Connections to design and launch projects designed to make their neighborhoods better places to raise children, all on a budget of $500. Examples include a garbage can decoration contest to encourage neighborhood cleanups and a shared economy for childcare solutions. Funding provided by People’s Liberty and United Way.2017 Champions for Change. Every September, Cradle Cincinnati celebrates individuals who are dedicated to reducing infant mortality. On September 13, we’ll recognize our 2017 Champions for Change with help from the Hamilton County Commissioners. Past recipients include local clergy, community health workers, neighborhood activists and more.Happy to Wait Northside Makeover. During the weekends of September 16 and 23, LPK Design and Landor, two of Cincinnati’s largest graphics and branding firms, are hosting staff giveback weekends to make over the Northside Health Center. This is the third local health center to receive a “Happy to Wait” transformation, designed to make medical settings more welcoming for patients.Real Men Onboard. Real Men Onboard, a partnership between Cradle Cincinnati and Operation Driven, launches its third class in late September. This free 9-week course for men connects participants with the needed resources their partner before, during and after pregnancy. More info is available at realmenonboard.org.Radio. Prominent local leaders Damon and Barbara Lynch will promote infant safe sleep through on Radio One stations throughout September. Babies sleep safest Alone, on their Back, and in a Crib.Billboards. Billboards throughout Hamilton County will feature safe sleep and room-sharing messaging. Families in need of a crib can call 211.Bus Ads. Cincinnati Metro buses will feature Cradle Cincinnati’s Queen City campaign (see below) via interior and exterior bus ads. Designed with a powerful message for moms, these ads direct women to the Ohio Tobacco Quitline for free over-the-phone smoking cessation support.
