Hamilton County recognizes October as "Safe Sleep for Babies Month"

October may be coming to a close, but we feel it's never too late to declare it as "Safe Sleep for Babies Month." And that's exactly what happened at the Hamilton County Commissioners' meeting last week. Hamilton County commissioners Todd Portune, Chris Monzel and Denise Driehaus publicly recognized the importance of infant safe sleep and presented representatives from Cradle Cincinnati, Hamilton County Public Health and the Cincinnati Health Department with an official statement of proclamation, which you can read below.We'd like to extend a big "thank you" to our county commissioners for their unwavering support safe sleep. Remember, babies sleep safest Alone, on their Back, and in a Crib - night time, nap time, every time.

Recognizing the Month of October as: "Safe Sleep for Babies Month" in Hamilton County

WHEREAS Hamilton County has unacceptably high infant mortality rates; andWHEREAS 101 babies died between 2010 and 2016 from unsafe sleeping conditions in Hamilton County; andWHEREAS Cradle Cincinnati, an organization focused on eliminating infant deaths, has and is spending the month of October educating the community about safe sleep for babies; andWHEREAS, Cradle Cincinnati and Charlie’s Kids Foundation are giving area hospitals safe sleep board books to be shared with new parents in October; andWHEREAS, Hamilton County Public Health is leading safe sleep trainings with childcare professionals and new parents throughout Hamilton County; andWHEREAS, the Cincinnati Health Department, Hamilton County Jobs and Family Services, and Kroger are promoting safe sleep to local families; andWHEREAS Safe sleep for babies means following the ABCs of Safe Sleep:  a baby is always put to sleep Alone, on his or her Back and in a Crib; andWHEREAS citizens are encouraged to share the ABCs of Safe Sleep with pregnant women and young families throughout the region.NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of County Commissioners of Hamilton County, Ohio does hereby recognize the month of October, 2017 as: "Safe Sleep for Babies Month" in all of Hamilton County.
