When health and art collide: Price Hill Health Center's makeover

We're excited to unveil the newly transformed and re-dedicated Price Hill Health Center, which provides prenatal care and WIC services to moms in Price Hill and surrounding neighborhoods. More than 100 volunteers and 16 local businesses all contributed to this six month long makeover designed to encourage moms to get more prenatal care. Projects included 7 large murals, new lobby furniture, 45 works of art created in collaboration with neighborhood families, 64 gallons of fresh paint added to the walls, 1600 square feet of replaced ceiling tile, and new signage.44% of women on Medicaid in Hamilton County do not receive adequate prenatal care, putting them at a higher risk for preterm birth and infant death.[1]Creating a more welcoming environment for care has been shown to increase patient engagement. “If we are going to end infant mortality we need to remove every obstacle to adequate prenatal care,” said Councilmember and Cradle Cincinnati Co-chair Wendell Young. “Creating a welcoming and encouraging space is a great place to start.”The partnership totaled $95,000 in donations and included:

GBBN Architects give back. A team of architects and interior designers donated over $20K in services and materials to transform the WIC office as well as a newly redesigned staff break and conference room.
15 additional partner business donations. Donations of new furniture from RCF Group, RJE Business Interiors, Office Furniture Source and School Outfitters. Material support from Deskey, Valspar, Sherwin Williams, USG Corporation, Harlan Graphics, Baron Engraving, Formica Corporation, Standard Textile, Target, Jersey Mikes and Rusty Bucket.
Art from the community. University of Cincinnati Professor Ryan Mulligan and 11 students collaborated with local families, and artists in the community to produce 7 new murals and 45 original artworks for the health center. A free artists’ studio in the neighborhood was provided by Community Matters.
Volunteer driven. Over 100 volunteers from the Health Department, community groups, local residents, and university and high school students donated weekends to give extra love to a deserving care facility.

The Price Hill Health Center is one of seven centers run by the Cincinnati Health Department.This is the pilot of a new initiative to transform all 20-community health centers that serve families on Medicaid. Work at the Winton Hills Medical Center launches this fall.
